Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced up to $2 billion in funding to support the provinces and territories in safely reopening schools. The funding is flexible, permitting provinces and territories to use the money as needed. For example, funding can be used to adapt learning spaces, improve air ventilation, and purchase personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies and hand hygiene products. This funding is in addition to the previously announced $19 billion Safe Restart Agreement.
The funding will flow through the Safe Return to Class Fund. Provinces and territories will be allocated money based on the number of school aged children (children 4-18 years old) and there is a $2 million base amount provided to each jurisdiction. Details on the maximum funding allocation are available here. The funding will be provided in two instalments, with the first disbursement occurring in Fall 2020 and a second disbursement in early 2021.
The Prime Minister also announced an additional $112 million in funding for First Nations schools on reserves to help ensure these schools can open safely.
