Federal Government Announces New Funding Programs Ahead of Potential Election Call

In the two weeks since the adjournment of the House of Commons and Senate for summer recess, the Federal Government has been busy announcing and rolling out a number of new funding initiatives and recapitalization of existing programs, mostly announced in the April Budget, ahead of a potential election call in August.

Prime Minister Trudeau has returned to the road and a full tour schedule for the first time since the pandemic began in March 2020. His announcements have largely related to large capital infusions through the Strategic Innovation Fund for individual projects, as well as the successful completion of childcare agreements with British Columbia and Nova Scotia.  His Ministers, however, have also been busy announcing and re-announcing funding earmarked in Budget 2021 aimed at helping stabilize and rebuild the economy.

Because of this flurry of new or topped up funding envelopes, Sussex provides below a high-level overview of the most pertinent programs announced this week that may be of interest.
